Head of Safety - Multisport

Position title: Head of Safety – Multisport
Reports to: Land & Water Sports Manager / Head of Safety
Department: Sports Department
Location: Voss, Norway, Digital
Duration: Project-based position (before, during and after Ekstremsportveko)

About the sport

Multisport is returning to Ekstremsportveko after being off the program for some years. It won’t necessarily be the same as before – we want to shape it into something new, relevant, and exciting. The competition brings together several disciplines, which may vary from year to year, but often include running, biking, paddling, or climbing. The mix of land, water, and terrain makes safety planning especially important.

About the role

The Head of Safety for Multisport is responsible for ensuring that this revived competition is delivered in line with Ekstremsportveko’s safety standards, and in close cooperation with the central safety team. You don’t need to be an expert in all the individual disciplines, but you must have strong risk management skills, a structured mindset, and the ability to oversee safety across different environments. This is a unique opportunity to take part in bringing multisport back and shaping it for the future.

Key Responsibilities

Safety planning and risk assessment:

  • Develop a comprehensive safety plan and risk assessment for the multisport competition.

  • Identify risks linked to terrain, water, weather, and transitions – and prepare mitigation measures.

Coordination with safety teams:

  • Work closely with the central Veko safety team to align on standards, procedures, and emergency response.

  • Coordinate with medical staff, rescue teams, and volunteers to ensure readiness.

On-site safety management:

  • Oversee safety during the competition, ensuring checkpoints, transitions, and course areas are properly covered.

  • Monitor conditions and adapt plans in case of unexpected challenges (e.g., weather changes).

Collaboration and communication:

  • Support the Head of Multisport and volunteers with clear safety instructions.

  • Ensure that athletes receive accurate information on safety rules and procedures.

Continuous improvement:

  • Evaluate safety operations after the event and suggest improvements for future editions.

What we expect

  • Safety knowledge: Experience with risk management and safety procedures in outdoor sports or events.

  • Broad sports understanding: Familiarity with endurance sports such as running, biking, paddling, or climbing (not required to be an expert in all).

  • Leadership and communication: Ability to give clear instructions and guide volunteers, athletes, and crew.

  • Crisis management: Calm under pressure and capable of making quick, well-grounded decisions.

  • Structured and adaptable: Strong planning skills, with the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions.

Working hours and duration

The role requires flexibility, with high activity in the period before, during, and immediately after the festival. On-site presence in Voss is necessary to ensure safe and effective competition delivery.

We offer

  • A central role in ensuring safe and professional execution of multisport at one of the world’s most renowned extreme sports festivals.

  • A dynamic work environment with close collaboration between sport leaders, athletes, volunteers, and the central safety team.

  • Valuable experience in risk management, safety coordination, and international festival operations.

  • The chance to be part of reviving multisport at Ekstremsportveko and shaping it into something new.
